Landfill

500 feet from an open portion of the Colorado Aqueduct, the source of water
for 16 million Southern Californians.
- Surrounded
on three sides by Joshua Tree National Park; the closest part is within 2600
yards.
- Dumping
40 MILLION pounds of solid waste EVERY DAY FOR THE NEXT 100 YEARS; waste
will come from Santa Barbara, Los Angeles and San Diego Counties.
- Delivered
by SEVEN one mile-long double-decker trains roaring across the desert bisecting
critical desert tortoise habitat 14 trips per day; plus more trash in an
additional 200 garbage trucks per day.
- Trash to
be dumped onto open desert vulnerable to high winds, NOT only in the East
Pit.
- Situated
within range of the San Andreas and Lavic Lake Faults the latter generating
a 7.1 Magnitude earth-quake on October 16, 1999
- The dump
will send an open invitation to new predators and scavengers, destroying
the environment's natural balance.
- Trains,
trucks and facilities are expected to pump 5000 tons of air pollution annually.
