Llano Del Rio Commune, Antelope Valley, California
Llano del Rio was a socialist colony which existed briefly in the years before World War I in Southern California’s Antelope Valley. The colony, founded by Los Angeles mayoral candidate Job Harriman, has been extensively documented in many books, including Paul Kagan’s New World Utopias (Penguin Books, 1975) and Bread & Hyacinths: The Rise and Fall of Utopian Los Angeles by Paul Greenstein, Nigel Lennon, and Lionel Rolfe (California Classics Books, 1992). A fascinating interpretation of, and introduction to, the ruins can be found in Mike Davis’s book City of Quartz.
