“Some of designing is intuitive and allowing the research to blend with the contemporary fashion and how people dress in the street,” he says. “I think it’s always important for characters, as they’re designed, to seem natural in stage clothes – that they are wearing and owning the costume and the clothes are not superimposed on top of them.”

Tazewell also chats about his views and hopes for the LGBT community in New York City and across the nation.

“Within the world of New York City and then within the world of theatre, we’re in this kind of bubble,” he says. “Being immersed in the theatre community, it becomes a very safe haven.”
