American
my American-ness
25 December 1998
What can I say? I'm an American. I was born in America, I was raised in America, and I live my life in America. This has shaped who I am, what I do, my value systems, everything: it defines who I am. I believe that if I left America -- say, to live on a Pacific island among the native inhabitants -- I would eventually take on many of their cultural characteristics. I would become fundamentally different from Americans. But if I do not go live on a Pacific island, if I do not physically go to another place and live in a culture very different from mine, I cannot shed, in any significant ways, my American-ness. In America, I will always be American, and I believe this is true of any American.
This
is bullshit. Take me to exuberance. | Fuck
you, Matt.
